Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the extent of the implementation of basic science programme in Junior Secondary Schools in Nasarawa West Zone of Nasarawa state. This study mainly intends to find out whether the curriculum content of the Basic Science Programme are taught to the students as specified, the availability, adequacy and utilization of facilities, the quality and quantity of teachers, the teaching methods applied by teachers and the performance of students in the Basic Science Programme in Junior Secondary School Certificate Examinations (JSSCE) in the state. A total of eighteen junior secondary schools were sampled, and teachers and students were given questionnaires to collect data. These facts were disclosed as a result of the research. Basic science programs are being implemented to a large extent in Nasarawa West Junior Secondary Schools; however, the facilities available for the implementation of Basic Science Programs are insufficient, and there is a significant difference between the average perception of rural and urban teachers on the extent to which the basic science program curriculum is being implemented in Nasarawa West Zone. Finally, the results of this study show that there is no significant difference in mean performance scores of male and female students in Nasarawa West Zone junior secondary school students in basic science achievement tests.
